Metallica: Some Kind of Monster
2004 - Bruce Sinofsky, Joe Berlinger - 141 mins - USA
Fri 3 Jun 2005 at 8.30pm Astor Cinema, Scariff
Storyline: Documentary that follows the members of Metallica (James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett) through group therapy, dealing with the aftermath of bassist Jason Newsted leaving the group, Hetfield’s rehab stint, and the near breakup of the band during the making of the St. Anger album. Reeling from Newsted’s departure, bitter in-fighting, bad press over their role in the Napster controversy, and frontman James Hetfield’s continuing battle against alcoholism, Metallica re-convene in the studio with new bassist Rob Trujillo and begin group therapy in an attempt to record a new album – accompanied by a film crew who followed them day and night, shooting over 1200 hours of footage. What emerges is a fascinating, astonishingly intimate study of masculinity, friendship and workplace dynamics, one that’s just as fascinating for those with no interest in Metallica (or metal in general), as for hardcore fans.
